Guide

FormatLab is an AI sparring partner for developing TV and streaming formats. You can upload a format, describe an idea, or let FormatLab listen to a brainstorm session — after which FormatLab analyses the format, asks questions and helps you improve it.

Getting started

  1. Choose your language: NL or EN (top left on the home screen)
  2. Click Start a session
  3. Fill in: target market, programme type, target broadcaster, programme length and number of episodes
  4. Choose how you want to start:

What can FormatLab do?

Based on your input, FormatLab provides a First Impression of your format.

FormatLab can also:

  • Generate social trends and develop format ideas from them that you can work on together
  • Provide an Industry Update — what's happening in the format world?

Developing your format

You can develop the format further using two modes:

ModeWhat does it do?
AnalysisFormatLab asks 5 sharp questions about the structure of your format. No suggestions — pure diagnostics.
InspirationThe same questions, but now with concrete ideas and proposals per question.

For each question you can give your input by typing or speaking using the microphone button.

Tip: FormatLab only takes your input into account when developing the format. So give clear answers to the questions in Analysis mode, or indicate whether you think FormatLab's suggestions in Inspiration mode are a good or bad idea.

FormatLab is an iterative model. You can keep making new rounds in Analysis or Inspiration mode — for as long as you want. With every input you give, the format improves. You can also switch between the two modes.

Summarising and exporting

Choose Summarise Session to get an overview of how the format has developed. FormatLab also shows comparable formats and provides an estimate of production costs.

From the Summary you can open the Pitch It page and export the following files:

  • First impression — the initial analysis of your format
  • Summary — the development process in one overview
  • Format — complete (rewritten) format document (~1000 words)
  • Pitch Deck — 10-slide pitch deck
Tip: When exporting, you can upload your own format or pitch deck as a reference for writing style and structure.

Saving your session

Click Save session to preserve your work. You can always continue working on the same format later via Pick up existing session on the home screen.
